Dealing with your parent’s stubbornness!
May 19, 2025Mobility and balance can become more of a challenge as age progresses. This may be due to
sensory impairment, arthritis, reduced mobility, stiffness, and also can be due to conditions
relating to the heart and blood pressure and many more.
Falls are a leading cause of injury among older adults and can cause injuries, hospital visits,
broken bones, bruising and can affect confidence and mobility longer term. Falls can be
inevitable as we get older but there are also many prevention techniques and adaptations that
can help reduce the risk. With proactive measures many falls can be avoided.
Regular exercises incorporated into everyday routines to maintain and/or improve strength,
such as stand up and down 3 times before actually getting up to keep legs strong. Exercises
like yoga and tai chi can significantly improve stability, balance and coordination.
Environmental factors can be adapted and removed such as:
- Replacing flooring with non-slip alternatives – remove loose rugs and mats
- Having good lighting, especially for walkways and staircases
- A handrail both sides of the stairs
- Stairlift
- Toilet frames
- Installing grab rails and ramps
- Clutter free floors and spaces
Equipment to assist with mobility to prevent falls:
- Using a wheeled trolley to carry items around inside
- Walking sticks and zimmer frames
- Good quality sturdy slippers
- Wheeled walkers and eventually Wheelchairs for going out
- Recliner chairs
- Height adjustable beds
When the time comes, getting support in place to reduce the risk of falls further:
- Help and support at key times of the day can prevent falls – when getting out of bed, getting dressed, when taking a shower, when preparing a meal, when going to bed.
Taking note of these points can prevent a fall and can keep you comfortable for longer in
your own environment.
